Commission approves EUR 111.7 million Greek State aid to support production of renewable hydrogen
Today, the European Commission (Commission) has approved a EUR 111.7 million Greek state aid measure to support Motor Oil Hellas, a Greek refinery company, in producing renewable hydrogen. This measure will promote the decarbonisation of the mobility and industrial sectors. It is fully financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and takes the form of a direct grant.
The Commission approved the measure under the 2022 Guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection and energy (‘CEEAG’). It concluded that the Greek measure is necessary and proportionate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through renewable hydrogen production, aligning with the REPowerEU Plan. It also found the measure proportionate, noting safeguards such as a claw-back mechanism.
