Commission approves EUR 172 million State aid to support preparatory works for the development of new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands
The Commission has approved a EUR 172 million measure to support preparatory work for potential new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands, aimed at contributing to the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy mix.
The beneficiary is Nucleaire Energie Organisatie Nederland B.V. (NEO NL), a newly established state-owned entity, and will cover activities such as selecting technology vendors and obtaining necessary licenses. The measure does not fund construction or operation of the plants. The support includes a EUR 127 million convertible loan and a EUR 45 million equity contribution.
The Commission approved the measure under under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, concluding that it is necessary, proportionate, and has a limited impact on competition and trade, ensuring a compliant preparatory phase for potential nuclear projects in the Netherlands.
