Commission approves EUR 211 million Italian State aid measure to support photonic chips development
The measure will support the development of graphene-based photonic optical transceivers by Italian SME CamGraPhIC. Optical transceivers are devices used to send and receive data through light instead of electrons in chips and can be used in different sectors, including automotive, telecommunication, aerospace and defence. They are expected to improve the device’s performance and efficiency.
The project will take place in Pisa and Bergamo and involve collaboration with universities and research organisations. The funding will be provided as a direct grant.
The Commission concluded that the measure is necessary, proportionate, and aligned with EU rules, as it promotes research and innovation in chip technology and would not proceed without public support, while not distorting competition. It considered the measure to be compatible on the basis of Article 107(3)(c) TFEU and the provisions of the Guidelines for research, development and innovation.
