Commission approves EUR 288 million State aid for facilities in semiconductor value chain in Germany

The Commission has approved EUR 288 million in German State aid to support two first-of-a-kind facilities in the semiconductor supply chain. The measures include EUR 222 million for Carl Zeiss to develop next-generation EUV optical columns in Baden-Württemberg and EUR 66 million for Zadient Materials Europe GmbH to establish a facility producing ultra-pure silicon carbide in Saxony-Anhalt.

The projects aim to strengthen Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy in the semiconductor sector, in line with the objectives of the European Chips Act. The Commission found that the aid was necessary, proportionate and conducive to the development of innovative manufacturing capacities with wider positive effects for the EU semiconductor ecosystem.
