Commission greenlights EUR 3.1 billion State aid support for cogenerated electricity in Spain
The Commission has approved a EUR 3.1 billion Spanish State aid scheme to support the production of electricity from new or substantially refurbished highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) plants contributing to the implementation of Spain’s National Energy and Climate Plan, the Clean Industrial Deal and the EU’s energy efficiency targets.
Operators of CHP installations located in Spain that meet the EU definition of high-efficiency cogeneration will be the beneficiaries. The scheme will support CHP plants using natural gas, biogas, bioliquids and solid biomass. The financial support will take the form of a remuneration premium that consists of compensation for investments and compensation for operations.
The Commission approved the scheme under the 2022 Guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection and energy, concluding that it is necessary, appropriate and proportionate to increase energy efficiency and accelerate the green transition.
