Commission greenlights EUR 6 million State aid for Erfurt Airport in Germany

The Commission has approved EUR 6 million of operating aid for Erfurt Airport, a regional airport located in Thuringia and handling around 314,000 passengers in 2025. The airport is operated by the publicly owned Flughafen Erfurt GmbH and had previously received EUR 11.6 million in operating support between 2015 and 2024. Germany notified the additional aid in December 2025, aiming to support the airport until April 2027.

The Commission assessed the measure under the Aviation Guidelines, taking into account the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, which have reduced passenger traffic and increased operating costs. It found that the aid is limited to what is strictly necessary to allow the airport to reach full cost coverage by April 2027 and that the measure supports regional connectivity and development while avoiding undue distortions of competition in the internal market.
