Commission Publishes Notices to Enhance Grid Efficiency, Lower Costs, and Promote Clean Energy

The Commission has published three coordinated notices to modernise Europe’s electricity grids, accelerate renewable energy deployment, and reduce energy costs, as part of the Clean Industrial Deal and the Action Plan for Affordable Energy.

The package addresses rising demand, rapid electrification, and record renewable generation, highlighting the need for around EUR 1.2 trillion in grid investments by 2040. Smarter use of existing infrastructure and more efficient grid tariffs are central to keeping energy affordable and supporting EU competitiveness.

The notices provide guidance on redesigning network tariffs, promoting innovative renewable technologies such as rooftop solar and floating offshore wind, and designating dedicated areas for grid and storage infrastructure to streamline permitting. By coordinating grid expansion, tariff reform, and renewables deployment, the Commission aims to strengthen Europe’s clean-tech sector, improve energy affordability, and ensure progress toward the EU’s climate and industrial goals.
