EUR 615.7 million Dutch scheme to reduce emissions in dairy farming approved
The Commission has approved a EUR 615.7 million Dutch scheme to support the voluntary reduction of herd size in the dairy farming sector. The measure aims to reduce greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions by encouraging dairy farmers to temporarily decrease their livestock numbers over a three-year period, thereby contributing to climate mitigation and environmental protection.
Under the scheme, eligible dairy farmers will receive direct grants covering up to 100% of eligible costs. The programme will run for five years and is open to farmers who kept dairy cows and calves in 2025.
The Commission approved the measure under the 2023 Guidelines for State aid in the agricultural and forestry sectors and in rural areas, concluding that it is necessary, appropriate and proportionate, with limited effects on competition and trade while supporting EU environmental and climate objectives.
