FIRST MEASURE APPROVED UNDER THE METSAF: EUR 13 million aid scheme to support fishing French companies in France

The Commission has approved a EUR 13 million French aid scheme to support fishing companies affected by the sharp increase in fuel prices resulting from the crisis in the Middle East. The measure aims to help the sector cope with rapidly rising operating costs and preserve its economic viability. Marine fuel prices increased by more than 75% between late February and April 2026, severely impacting fuel-intensive sectors such as fisheries. The scheme will remain in force until 31 December 2026 and will cover fuel costs incurred in April and May 2026.

The aid will take the form of direct grants calculated on the basis of fuel purchases, with beneficiaries receiving EUR 0.20 per litre for fuel purchased in April 2026 and EUR 0.35 per litre for fuel purchased in May 2026.

The Commission approved the scheme under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), notably because it supports the continued development of the fishery sector while safeguarding its contribution to food security at both national and EU level, without unduly distorting competition in the internal market.
