2024 Report on Competition Policy Published
The Commission has released its 2024 Competition Policy Report, outlining key legislative initiatives, policy developments, and notable enforcement actions from the year.
The Report emphasizes how competition policy reinforces the Single Market by enabling businesses to scale and thrive, ultimately benefiting European citizens. It highlights the alignment of competition enforcement with the EU’s industrial policy and consumer-focused goals.
Part I of the Report concerns legislation and policy developments. Chapter I.3 is devoted to State aid control and reports about the important instruments such as the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework to support transition towards a net-zero economy or the Recovery and Resilience Facility. It also covers significant judgments in State aid matters rendered by the EU Courts (amongst others Fehmarn Belt, Hemweg or Micula). Chapter I.4 focuses on the Foreign Subsidies Regulation.
Part II of the Report provides a sectoral overview. Particularly relevant in the context of State aid law are Section 1 on Energy and Environment and Section 4 Taxation and State aid.
The Report is presented to the European Parliament, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee, and the Committee of the Regions. It is accompanied by a detailed Staff Working Document outlining sector-specific policy and enforcement updates, as well as an online infographic highlighting key achievements from 2024.
