Commission approves EUR 41.5 million Italian aid to support new glass‑based photonic chip factory

The measure provides support to Ephos S.r.l., an SME, in building the EU’s first facility for producing glass‑based photonic chips near Milan. This unique manufacturing process will boost Europe’s technological autonomy in semiconductors, enabling faster chip production for advanced uses such as data centres and quantum computing.

The measure has been approved under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (‘TFEU’). The assessment is based on the principles of the European Chips Act Communication. The Commission has found the aid proportionate and necessary to enable the investment.
