Commission Approves EUR 41 Million German Aid to support Uniper Hydrogen’s Renewable Hydrogen Production

Today, the European Commission (Commission) has approved a EUR 41 million German State aid measure to support Uniper Hydrogen GmbH in producing renewable hydrogen in Huntorf, Lower Saxony.

The funding will support the company’s ‘CHESS’ project, which involves building and operating a 30 MW electrolyser powered by renewable energy. Scheduled for completion by 2027, the project will receive support in the form of a direct grant.

The Commission approved the measure under the 2022 Guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection and energy  (‘CEEAG’). It found that the measure is necessary and appropriate to facilitate the production of renewable hydrogen, considering also that Uniper Hydrogen will disseminate the knowledge obtained from the CHESS project, further enabling the roll-out of the relevant technology.

Moreover, the Commission concluded that the measure supports the objective of the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the REPowerEU Plan, is proportionate, has incentive effect and a limited impact on competition and trade between Member States.
