Commission approves EUR 48 million French State aid measure for a Lithium-ion battery factory

Today, the European Commission (Commission) has approved a EUR 48 million French aid measure under EU State aid rules to support Envision AESC France in establishing a new Lithium-ion battery production facility for electric vehicles in Douai, Hauts-de-France.

The aid consists of a direct grant. In its initial phase, the plant will manufacture Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles with an annual production capacity of 9 GWh.

The Commission approved the measure under the 2022 Regional Aid Guidelines (‘RAG’). It found that the project will have a positive impact by creating approximately 1,000 direct jobs. Moreover, it has incentive effect and is necessary, appropriate and proportionate as it does not exceed the maximum aid intensity allowed under France’s Regional aid map.
