Commission clears EUR 300 million Slovak aid scheme to support the rail sector

The Commission has approved a EUR 300 million Slovak aid scheme to encourage the purchase of new rail freight wagons and promote a shift from road to rail transport. Support will be granted through direct subsidies covering up to 50% of the purchase cost, with aid capped at EUR 200 million per beneficiary. Eligible beneficiaries are railway operators and wagon owners.

The Commission approved the scheme under Article 93 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) on transport coordination, finding it necessary and proportionate to promote the use of rail freight transport, which is less polluting and reduces road congestion.
