ESA approves Icelandic scheme to support subtitling and dubbing of children’s media content
Today, the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has approved an Icelandic support scheme to assist private media outlets with the costs of dubbing and subtitling children’s content, promoting the Icelandic language and accessibility.
In line with Iceland’s Media Act, national broadcasters must dub or subtitle non-Icelandic TV shows and movies into Icelandic and provide subtitles for all domestic programmes, including children’s content, to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
The scheme, running until 31 December 2027, allocates up to ISK 60 million (approximately EUR 392,000) annually, covering 80% of eligible dubbing and subtitling costs. This initiative helps private media outlets broaden the range of foreign children’s programming accessible in Icelandic, fostering cultural diversity and language preservation.
