Renewables: Commission Greenlights Belgian State Aid Scheme to Boost Renewable Energy in Wallonia
The European Commission has greenlit a Belgian green certificate scheme designed to bolster renewable electricity production in the Walloon region. This initiative empowers renewable energy producers to obtain green energy certificates, tradable on the market or with local operator Elia, ensuring supplementary income alongside electricity market prices.
Encompassing a range of green technologies such as photovoltaic, wind, hydropower, biomass, biogas, biomethane, and geothermal, the scheme is allocated a maximum budget of €755 million for the 2024-2028 period. Certificates, issued for 10 to 25 years based on technology, will remain in effect until 31 March 2028.
The Commission’s evaluation, guided by the Guidelines on State aid for climate, environmental protection, and energy, concluded to the scheme’s necessity and alignment with the objectives of the European Green Deal.
