REPowerEU: Commission Presents Guidance and Recommendations to Accelerate Renewable Energy Roll-out Ahead of REPowerEU Anniversary
Nearly two years since the adoption of the REPowerEU Plan, the Commission unveils further support measures to expedite the deployment of renewable energy across Member States, thereby diminishing reliance on Russian fossil fuel imports.
Today’s announcement encompasses a suite of new and updated recommendations and guidance documents aimed at enhancing permitting procedures and auctions for renewables. By fortifying demand for domestically produced clean technologies, this initiative not only bolsters industrial competitiveness but also fortifies the energy system’s resilience, aligning with the objectives of the European Green Deal.
In particular, the Commission adopted a Recommendation on accelerating permit-granting procedures, which delineates pathways to streamline planning and permitting processes for renewable energy and associated infrastructure projects in the EU, while underscoring the importance of stakeholder consultation in fast-tracking procedures for deploying specific technologies.
Additionally, the Commission’s recommendation and guidance on auction design set forth standard elements to harmonise and enhance the efficiency of these processes. By incorporating non-price criteria, such as quality and environmental sustainability, into auction designs, Member States can incentivize higher value-added projects, nurturing Europe’s net-zero technology manufacturing ecosystem.
